Please Protect Our Sand Dollars!

Jekyll Island has endless natural beauty to offer guests. With over 10 miles of stunning beaches, you’re sure to get a glimpse of sand dollars, hermit crabs, and starfish. Please remember to admire these creatures on the beach, but do not take them home. Removing wildlife from it’s natural habitat destroys the fragile ecosystem of our coastlines.

This warning needs to be posted in all the hotels, bath houses, shops and restaurants on the island. Whenever I found a sand dollar on the beach I always threw it back in the surf, hopefully far out enough so it didn’t get discovered again. I tell people I “take no prisoners” when they wonder at my actions. I can’t rescue all of them but I try to do my part.
