Spotlight: Jekyll Island Arts Association

The Jekyll Island Arts Association will proudly host the August 1 - August 31 exhibit of oils and pastels painter, Denise Champion and wood carver, Jim Branham. The gallery is in Goodyear Cottage in Jekyll’s lovely historic district.

Jim Branham realized that he had a knack for carving after he accepted the challenge of learning to use a set of tools he inherited from his father-in-law. He soon discovered that he loves it and is happiest in his shop, coaxing art from discarded driftwood. He now has seven years of carving experience and many awards such as the Woodcraft Magazine regional title. Several stores carry his carvings, and he has been commissioned to make special pieces. You’ll be delighted to see the detail added to make each piece a unique work of art.

Plein air painter, Denise Champion, is very attune to the changes of light and color around her. She states that “the small whispers of color in the shadows and the loud voices of the light are what excite and inspire” her. She enjoys sharing her vision of color - “a solitary journey that is only completed when shared with others.” As well as being one of the featured exhibitors in August, she has invited other painters to join her at Goodyear cottage on August 9 at 9:00am to plein air paint with her.

Everyone is welcome to attend an artists’ reception that will be held on August 3rd from 1 - 3pm. Visit us then, or during the regular hours of the gallery and shop in Goodyear: Monday - Friday from noon to 4pm and weekends 10am - 4pm. Admission is always free.
