Sounds, Surf, and Swingin’ Fun: Jekyll Island’s Beach Music Festival

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Jekyll Island is bringing the Golden Isles the biggest, best beach concert in years. Why? Because it is free. The 2008 Beach Music Festival is hitting the coast hard with musical sounds from the Rickey Godfrey Band, Second Chance, and the Swingin’ Medallions.

Providing entertainment for everyone is The Rickey Godfrey Band’s specialty. The unique combination of musical influences shared by the groups’ five full-time, professional musicians gives the band a sound the makes the waves go crashing. An energetic, talented, and entertaining group, they have been touring throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe since the 1970’s and are now looking forward to playing in the Golden Isles.

Second Chance is back again. Opening for the 2007 Beach Music Festival, they are returning again to do what they love best: sing. With the smooth sounds of songs like “I Love Beach Music” and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” this group showcases everything from vocals to saxophone to bass guitar.

Rocking beaches all over since 1965 the Swingin’ Medallions is the epitome of beach music. Drawing inspiration from early R&B, the band has been described to have a beach music, frat rock, shag sound that keeps the crowds moving.

The fun starts Thursday night with an Early Bird Party for shag club members. If you’re a member of a shag club, join other club members at the Jekyll Oceanfront Resort on Thursday, August 14. The party starts at 7:00 p.m. and tickets are $10 per couple. Friday Festival-goers can enjoy the Beach Music Festival Golf Tournament. Friday morning, August 15th, participants can play in the most talked about summer golf tournament in South Georgia. Tee times begin at 9:00a.m. until 11:00a.m. at the Indian Mounds course. Registration is $80 per player with lunch provided by Morgan’s Grill. Registration includes two tickets to the Friday night Kick-Off Party. Tournament tee times can be made by calling the golf course at 912-635-2368.

The Friday Night Beach Music Festival Kick-Off Party starts at 8:00 p.m. in Atlantic Hall at the Jekyll Island Convention Center. Enjoy a shag contest and the delightful sounds of the Swingin’ Medallions in concert. Tickets can be purchased online.

Shrimp and Grits Champion Returns to Defend His Title.

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Christopher Hewitt, professional chef at the Olde Pink House in Savannah, Georgia will be a tough act to follow this year.

Falling in love with cooking came to Hewitt at the age of 12-years-old. Though he was not allowed to cook in the kitchen in his youth, Christopher was exposed to cooking through his family’s restaurant business. His dad, also a chef, caught him cooking eggs on the radiator in his room and his career began.

Graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, he has been working at the Olde Pink House for a little over two years. Hewitt was featured on two Iron Chef episodes on the Food Network, in which he cooked with world-renowned top chef Bobby Flay in New York and Japan.
Enjoying the relaxation that Jekyll Island offers, Mr. Hewitt is preparing for the upcoming competition where he wowed the taste buds of judges with his impeccable Southern Sushi in 2007. Judges can begin salivating again as Hewitt plans something spectacular to reclaim his title.

Spotlight: Jekyll Island Arts Association

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

The Jekyll Island Arts Association will proudly host the August 1 - August 31 exhibit of oils and pastels painter, Denise Champion and wood carver, Jim Branham. The gallery is in Goodyear Cottage in Jekyll’s lovely historic district.

Jim Branham realized that he had a knack for carving after he accepted the challenge of learning to use a set of tools he inherited from his father-in-law. He soon discovered that he loves it and is happiest in his shop, coaxing art from discarded driftwood. He now has seven years of carving experience and many awards such as the Woodcraft Magazine regional title. Several stores carry his carvings, and he has been commissioned to make special pieces. You’ll be delighted to see the detail added to make each piece a unique work of art.

Plein air painter, Denise Champion, is very attune to the changes of light and color around her. She states that “the small whispers of color in the shadows and the loud voices of the light are what excite and inspire” her. She enjoys sharing her vision of color - “a solitary journey that is only completed when shared with others.” As well as being one of the featured exhibitors in August, she has invited other painters to join her at Goodyear cottage on August 9 at 9:00am to plein air paint with her.

Everyone is welcome to attend an artists’ reception that will be held on August 3rd from 1 - 3pm. Visit us then, or during the regular hours of the gallery and shop in Goodyear: Monday - Friday from noon to 4pm and weekends 10am - 4pm. Admission is always free. For more information, call 912-635-3920.

Please Protect Our Sand Dollars!

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Jekyll Island has endless natural beauty to offer guests. With over 10 miles of stunning beaches, you’re sure to get a glimpse of sand dollars, hermit crabs, and starfish. Please remember to admire these creatures on the beach, but do not take them home. Removing wildlife from it’s natural habitat destroys the fragile ecosystem of our coastlines.

August Georgia Sea Turtle Center Update

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Early Risers Can Enjoy Hatchling Walks

These tours offer a look at the sea turtle conservation efforts and research programs on Jekyll Island. Early morning risers will explore barrier island ecology while visiting the island’s active turtle nests. The tours include opportunities to assist with data recording and to witness a nest excavation of a hatched nest!
Walks will be conducted on Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday throughout August, and September (Walks after mid-September are tentative based on hatching and may be cancelled). Time varies between 7am-10am, depending on the tide. Location will also vary depending on which nest has hatched and is ready to be excavated.
Participants will be asked to meet at the designated site 15-30 minutes prior to the walk to check-in (you will receive a phone call a couple of days before your walk with directions to the site) and gather as a group with the Walk Guide to begin the walk on time. The walk will consist of a 30-minute beach ecology walk/talk leading up to an active nest that has been hatching on its own for a minimum of 5 days. The group will be met by the Turtle Patrol Interns who will conduct the post-hatching excavation on the nest. Group size is limited in order to maximize the experience for participants and in compliance with Georgia Department of Natural Resources permit restrictions.

Cost is $10 adults (ages 13+), $5 children (12 and under). Price does not include general admission to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center)
*Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
For more information, visit www.georgiaseaturtlecenter.org or call the Georgia Sea Turtle at 912-635-4444.

Arribada Adventures

These two hour programs will introduce you and your little hatchlings to Georgia’s turtles! Become an expert Turtler through hands-on activities, games, crafts, and outdoor exploration. Space is limited and reservations are required. For registration and location information, please call 912-635-4444.

Cost: $10/adult, $5/child*. Saturdays 9:00am -11:00am
*Please note that price does not include general admission to the Center.
August 2: Lend ‘em a Flipper
Learn how YOU too can help our fine, flippered friends by participating in a beach sweep and creating
recycled sea turtle art.
August 9: Giving Sea Turtles a Chance
Come learn what the Georgia Sea Turtle Center is doing to help sea turtles. Participate in a mock sea turtle rescue and learn what we do to rehabilitate a turtle!

Education and Conservation

Georgia Sea Turtle Center Educators Alicia Marin and Sarah Mathias had the opportunity to attend and present at the National Marine Educators Association Conference, One World, One Water held in Savannah this year. Sarah presented “Swim into Learning with Sea Turtles,” an update on the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and the education programs we offer children. Alicia presented her Masters Thesis, “Sun, Sand and Sea Turtle: Educating Caribbean Youth through Nonformal Environmental Education.”
The Georgia Sea Turtle Center Education Department is proud to announce that during their first year of operation, approximately 4500 children from 78 individual schools! With that in mind we greatly look forward to the upcoming school year and encourage teachers to bring their students to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center for a visit.
