There are so many things we LOVE to do there but those are our top five…well and of course the beach!! I can’t wait to go back in May!!!

Been to Jekyll Island twice now from England and we love it, its a beautiful place. We especially love going round the historial area and imagining how it must have been when all the cottages were lived in. Jekyll is a little bit of unspoilt paradise. Its amazing that more people dont know about it but maybe thats part of the appeal ….

Georgia Sea Turtle Center to Release Two Loggerhead Sea Turtles

Friday, April 24th, 2009
Snowball

blizzard-1-20-09-003-451x300

The Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island will release two rehabilitated loggerhead sea turtles, Snowball and Blizzard, off the coast of Tybee Island, GA on Saturday, April 25. The release will be held in conjunction with the 5th Annual Tybee Turtle Trot hosted by the Tybee Island Marine Science Center.

Both Snowball and Blizzard were part of a cold stunning event off the North Carolina coast. Cold-stunned sea turtles become comatose due of a sudden drop in their environmental water temperature, called cold-stunning. Sea turtles, like other reptiles, are ectothermic, or “cold blooded”. For this reason, all of their bodily functions shut down when water temperatures fall below 50° F. They often also contract secondary problems such as fungal pneumonia and bone infections. Snowball and Blizzard arrived at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island on November 26, 2008 and were slowly warmed, re-nourished, and treated with antibiotics and other medications. Now back to a healthy condition, the turtles are ready for release back into the ocean.

The public is invited to attend and observe the release which is set for 10:00 AM near the Tybee Island Marine Science Center. For more information on the release and the Tybee Turtle Trot event visit tybeeturtletrot.net. For more information on the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island visit georgiaseaturtlecenter.org or jekyllisland.com.

ASA “Santa’s Special Sleigh” Visits the Georgia Sea Turtle Center

Monday, December 8th, 2008

p1010020_3x2.jpg

Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA), a wholly owned subsidiary of SkyWest, Inc. (NASDAQ: SKYW), flew 30 students from Hendrix Drive Elementary School in Forest Park, Ga., to visit Santa Claus on Jekyll Island, Ga. The students departed Atlanta aboard a 50-seat Bombardier CRJ200 regional jet – dubbed “Santa’s Special Sleigh” – and returned before the end of the school day.

The students were chosen to fly aboard “Santa’s Special Sleigh” as a reward for excelling in Hendrix Drive Elementary School’s reading program. Each year more than two hundred students compete for a seat on Santa’s Special Sleigh by using Accelerated Reader (AR), a computerized reading program that tests the student’s reading comprehension.

ASA is a partner with Hendrix Drive Elementary School through Clayton County’s “Adopt-A-School” program. This is the sixth year that Santa’s Special Sleigh will take flight.

“For many of these children Santa’s Special Sleigh is their first opportunity to experience the excitement of flying,” said Lisa Walker, vice-president – Operational Support. ”They have worked hard to excel in their reading and ASA is proud to be part of rewarding their accomplishments.”

According to Nancy Said, principal at Hendrix Drive Elementary School, the possibility of traveling on “Santa’s Special Sleigh” motivates the students to participate in reading. “Each year our students begin the school year knowing they each have the opportunity to travel on ‘Santa’s Special Sleigh’ based on their commitment to reading outside of the normal school day. The students truly enjoy this trip as it is the first flight experience for many of them,” she said.

After arriving at the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport, the students visited The Georgia Sea Turtle Center where they explored the Center’s sea turtle exhibits and enjoyed learning about Georgia’s unique ecosystem. After the center tour, the students traveled to the Jekyll Island Convention Center to make holiday crafts, enjoyed lunch and took pictures with Santa before departing for home on Santa’s Special Sleigh.

Guitarist Brad Richter in Concert

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

brad_richter.jpgBrad Richter’s guitar concert at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel promises to be an exciting, memorable concert experience and a first for audiences in this part of the country. Throughout North America and Europe, Brad has performed as a soloist, with renowned chamber ensembles and in duos with artists such as Grammy winning cellist, David Finckel of the Emerson String Quartet. His performances and compositions are frequently heard on NPR and PBS stations around the United States, and he has also written and performed the score for the Emmy award winning PBS television series, The Desert Speaks. He as appeared at the Guitar Festival of Great Britain, the London International Guitar Festival, and the Aspen Music Festival among others. He currently teaches at the University of Arizona.
