Great Golf and Great Customer Service at Jekyll Island Golf Course

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Brian Powers of the Jekyll Island Golf Course

We got this super letter of appreciation from a customer of the golf course, and we thought we’d share and give Brian Powers his accolades…

Good evening Mr. Kicklighter

My name is Harvey Beaulac and I am writing to let you know how impressed my wife and I were with your staff, more specifically Brian Powers.  We visited the pro shop last week and Brian quickly picked up on our Canadian accent and did a great job in making us feel both welcome and at home by even speaking French to my wife.  He fully explained the Punch Card program to me and took the time to answer all of my questions regarding the intricacies of this program.

Today my wife and I again visited the pro shop (I had a tee time at 1:11) and we were again greeted by Brian and his assistant (I am sorry I forgot his name).  Both Brian and his assistant greeted us in French and made us feel truly welcomed.  After checking in for my tee time, I casually mentioned that today was my wife’s (Diane) birthday.  Brian and his assistant wished my wife a “very happy birthday” and Brian insisted in buying her a “birthday drink at the bar”.  He accompanied us to the bar and explained that he was simply giving us a taste of “southern hospitality.  WOW!!

To say we were totally impressed would be an understatement.   Brian asked the bartender to give my wife any drink she wanted.  Diane ordered a Diet Coke and Brian and I toasted her and wished her a happy birthday.  My wife said that it was the best Diet Coke she has had in quite a while.

I can’t wait to share this story with all my friends back home and stress how well we were treated at your establishment.  The golf courses, the training facilities and the service were all outstanding.

Thank you very much and you can be sure that we will be back next year.

Yours truly

H.C. Beaulac

How to Visit Georgia’s Jekyll Island

Looking for a gorgeous, quiet island getaway for summer? Visit Georgia’s scenic Jekyll Island, a beautiful paradise with stunning beaches, opportunities for fishing and boating and tons of relaxing activities to be enjoyed by young and old.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

  1. Step 1

Decide how you want to experience Jekyll Island. You can enjoy the island from a camp site under the stars or from within the comforts of your hotel room. Either way, you are sure to have an exceptional time. For nature-lovers, the island offers stunning sights. For luxury-seekers, the island offers world-class accommodations.

  2. Step 2

Book a dolphin tour. You can see the ocean and the island this way and get a fantastic break on oceanfront rooms, including food and tickets for the dolphin tour.

  3. Step 3

Become a beachcomber. Jekyll is a barrier island, so this means 10 miles of unique and constantly changing beaches. You can enjoy the array of seashells, wildlife and evolving changes brought about by time and tide.

  4. Step 4

Kayak through the inland waterways. Georgia’s Jekyll Island has an extraordinary protected ecosystem just begging to be explored and a kayak ride through the marshes offers amazing opportunities to see the unique wildlife of this area.

  5. Step 5

Look at the sea turtles. Unique to Jekyll Island are its female loggerhead sea turtles who come to lay their eggs in nests on the beautiful beaches between May and August of each year. They are almost extinct; so it is truly a wonder to see these rare beauties.

FUNDAMENTALS – MOST IMPORTANT, MOST IGNORED

kids_golfing2_fmtIn my 25 years of providing golf instruction, many students seem to seek two elusive basics from a golf lesson—distance and consistency. The students explain that their game is “on again – off again” and that they seem to lack the distance they should be achieving. I have found that the majority of players are missing some basic fundamentals of a golf swing.

The fundamentals of golf are like the foundation of a house. A good foundation supporting a house makes for a long lasting and enjoyable home. A house with a poor foundation is livable but has many problems over the course of time. Just like a golf swing.

There are only 2 basic fundamentals to a sound golf swing. Grip and posture. We will mention the posture aspect first. You want to make sure that have set yourself in a good, athletic position. Bent from the waist, a slight knee bend, with your weight evenly on the balls of your feet. Most people that I have encountered have played some sort of athletics over the years and have no problem accomplishing this.

A poor grip is the fault seen by golf instructors. There is an old saying that “you will never see a good golfer with a bad grip or a bad golfer with a good grip”. No truer words were ever spoken. Players tend to grip the golf club in a manner which is most comfortable to them. With the club positioned more in the palm of the hand. The proper grip should be as deep into the fingers as possible. Starting at the base of the pinky finger and across to the middle joint of the index finger. The next step is to roll the hand over and locking the club under the heel pad of the hand. If this is done correctly, you should be able to hold the club with the middle two fingers of the hand. There are a couple of checkpoints that we use to insure the club is gripped properly. The “V” formed between your thumb and index finger should always be pointing at your right shoulder. And when you look down you should be able to see the first two knuckles of your left hand. Gripping the club in this manner will allow the clubface to square itself at impact, thereby eliminating the need to adjust for the slice.

If you feel that you are having a problem with these fundamentals or other areas of your game contact your Jekyll Island PGA Professional for help.

Jekyll Island offers individual lessons, corporate and group clinics, as well as 1, 2, and 3 day schools. Weekly clinics starting in December.

Been to Jekyll Island twice now from England and we love it, its a beautiful place. We especially love going round the historial area and imagining how it must have been when all the cottages were lived in. Jekyll is a little bit of unspoilt paradise. Its amazing that more people dont know about it but maybe thats part of the appeal ….
