Spotlight: Jekyll Island Arts Association

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

The Jekyll Island Arts Association’s next exhibit emphasizing the aspects of meticulous detail and exceptional craftsmanship will feature watercolorist, Randy Hodges and the Jekyll Island Pottery Guild.

Over the years, many members of the Jekyll Island Pottery Guild have had individual shows at Goodyear Cottage. This summer, fortunately for the Golden Isles, they will present a group show comprised of several advanced level members including, Dave Palmer, Al Kline, Nan Phillips, Bonnie Newell, Sue Gertis, Art Sennett and Pat Sennett. The exceptional craftsmanship of these artists will include both functional and decorative items in a wide range of styles. The Jekyll Island Pottery Guild maintains a shop in the basement of Goodyear Cottage and recently opened an annex in the Jekyll Island Shopping Center. The guild members specialize in wheel throwing, hand building, slab and sculpture work. They participate in the Garden Club Bazaar, Tidelands Nature Festival, the Jekyll Island Arts Association’s Annual Arts Festival and other events throughout the year.

Painter Randy Hodges, a native of Tennessee, specializes in watercolor and emphasizes meticulous detail and the play of light and shadow. His subjects span off-the-beaten-path locations, the celebration of local traditions, and the beauty of Europe’s small towns and villages. After retiring from a successful career in advertising Randy turned to painting as a hobby. He is an active member of the East Tennessee Watercolor Society, Dayton Art League, and the Rhea County Arts Council. He lives with his wife, T.J., on Watts Bar Lake in Spring City, Tennessee.

The Randy Hodges and Jekyll Island Pottery Guild Exhibit will be on display in Goodyear Cottage located in the Jekyll Island Historic District from July 2nd – August 2nd with the artists’ reception on Sunday, July 5th from 1 – 3 PM. Admission is always free at Goodyear’s gallery and shop, where regular hours are M-F Noon - 4 PM and weekends 10 AM- 4 PM. For more information call 635-3920.

Jekyll Island’s Days Inn & Suites

Friday, June 5th, 2009

daysinn1When the going gets tough the tough get going, well that’s what the marketing team of the Days Inn & Suites has done. With the slow down in tourism and everyone watching every penny spent, it was important to get the word out that the Days Inn & Suites would offer creative specials to not only help their bottom line, but also the savvy traveler looking for a deal. The team came up with “The temperature of the Day Rate” last winter when the temperatures dropped down in the 30’s and even 20’s the guests walking into the hotel seeking a room paid what the outside thermometer read at time of check in!

“With all the cold nights we had this past winter needless to say, we had some very happy guests”, said General Manager, Shirley Rayhon. Not to be undone, and to keep the momentum going, the team came up with a “Spring Clearance Special” discounts as much as 45% off have been offered this spring over specific low occupancy dates. “With the success of both of these programs, we will certainly continue to offer these and other great specials throughout the rest of the year,” said Ms. Rayhon.

Many new renovations have been completed this year to include renovated lobby, breakfast room, and a brand new outside pool area where two oceanfront pools, one heated in the winter time, have been added. A hot tub and a separate kiddy pool have also been added. With the above improvements just completed, the hotel was nominated for the “Hotel Renovations of the Year” category at the recent Days Inn National Convention in Orlando, FL.

The Days Inn & Suites is owned and operated by Budget Motels, Inc. out of Manassas, Virginia. BMI has owned this property since 1998 when a complete 4 million dollar renovation was done. With these many new improvements simply goes with their philosophy and commitment to offer the best in customer service while providing a clean comfortable stay for their clientele.

Terrapin Turtles Receive Safe Havens Along the Jekyll Island Causeway

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Thanks to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, the University of Georgia, and the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, diamondback terrapins now have safe havens along the Jekyll Island Causeway. Artificial nest mounds with raccoon proof cages have been placed at strategic points to hopefully reduce the number of terrapins crossing the road.

“Every year 200-300 terrapins are hit by cars while trying to cross the causeway,” said Dr. Terry Norton, Director and Veterinarian for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center “The turtles are looking for elevated ground to nest. Since the roadways are elevated above the marshlands around them, terrapins often believe them to be suitable nesting areas.”

The mounds were built to be safe elevated nesting areas approximately 30 ft back from the edge of the causeway to thereby decrease the number of times the terrapins try to cross the road. In addition, cages on top of the mounds will reduce the threat of predation. Terrapins can get in and out of the cages through small spaces at the bottom, but predators such as raccoons can not.

The work, although in its preliminary stages, is backed by similar projects in the Northeast for wood turtles. The concept is still in a research stage, and the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and its collaborators will examine the results at the end of the nesting season to see how much of difference the project made. “We are basically testing it out,” said Norton. “So it is a research project with conservation implications.”
