Sounds, Surf, and Swingin’ Fun: Jekyll Island’s Beach Music Festival

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Jekyll Island is bringing the Golden Isles the biggest, best beach concert in years. Why? Because it is free. The 2008 Beach Music Festival is hitting the coast hard with musical sounds from the Rickey Godfrey Band, Second Chance, and the Swingin’ Medallions.

Providing entertainment for everyone is The Rickey Godfrey Band’s specialty. The unique combination of musical influences shared by the groups’ five full-time, professional musicians gives the band a sound the makes the waves go crashing. An energetic, talented, and entertaining group, they have been touring throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe since the 1970’s and are now looking forward to playing in the Golden Isles.

Second Chance is back again. Opening for the 2007 Beach Music Festival, they are returning again to do what they love best: sing. With the smooth sounds of songs like “I Love Beach Music” and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” this group showcases everything from vocals to saxophone to bass guitar.

Rocking beaches all over since 1965 the Swingin’ Medallions is the epitome of beach music. Drawing inspiration from early R&B, the band has been described to have a beach music, frat rock, shag sound that keeps the crowds moving.

The fun starts Thursday night with an Early Bird Party for shag club members. If you’re a member of a shag club, join other club members at the Jekyll Oceanfront Resort on Thursday, August 14. The party starts at 7:00 p.m. and tickets are $10 per couple. Friday Festival-goers can enjoy the Beach Music Festival Golf Tournament. Friday morning, August 15th, participants can play in the most talked about summer golf tournament in South Georgia. Tee times begin at 9:00a.m. until 11:00a.m. at the Indian Mounds course. Registration is $80 per player with lunch provided by Morgan’s Grill. Registration includes two tickets to the Friday night Kick-Off Party. Tournament tee times can be made by calling the golf course at 912-635-2368.

The Friday Night Beach Music Festival Kick-Off Party starts at 8:00 p.m. in Atlantic Hall at the Jekyll Island Convention Center. Enjoy a shag contest and the delightful sounds of the Swingin’ Medallions in concert. Tickets can be purchased online.

Bring your family to the beach Saturday, August 16th, to enjoy this free, live music event and make memories that will last a lifetime. For more information visit www.jekyllisland.com/beachmusicfestival or contact the Jekyll Island Visitors Information Center at 1-877-4-JEKYLL.
