Shrimp & Grits and Wild Georgia Shrimp to be featured on Food Network

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

throwdown-with-bobby-flaySince the inception of the Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits: Wild Georgia Shrimp Festival in 2006, Joe Barnett, Jr. has participated and won in every Shrimp & Grits Cooking Competition. His winning streak and jovial personality caught the attention of Food Network. On March 18 at 9:00 PM the amateur chef will go up against world-renowned chef Bobby Flay on Food Network’s “Throwdown with Bobby Flay”.

Taped in Joe Barnett’s hometown of Washington, GA, the show features Joe Barnett cooking his version of shrimp & grits against Bobby Flay’s version. Both chefs use locally caught wild Georgia shrimp provided by the Georgia Shrimp Association, a partner in the Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits annual festival. Their dishes are judged by local fans and shrimp & grits connoisseurs. The one-on-one competition was a complete surprise to Barnett. In each “Throwdown” episode, the amateur cook thinks Food Network is shooting their profile for a show. What they don’t know is that Food Network star Bobby Flay is going to drop in for a surprise visit and challenge them to an unexpected cook-off.

“I was shocked when Bobby Flay walked onto the set,” said Barnett. “Of course, I’m always up for a cook-off and was proud to represent the Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits Festival and the Georgia Shrimp Association.”

The annual Shrimp & Grits: Wild Georgia Shrimp Festival is held each year on Jekyll Island in September. This year’s event is scheduled for September 18-20 and will include cooking competitions, celebrity book signing, cooking demonstrations, shrimp boat tours and excursions and much more. More details can be found at jekyllisland.com and the festival Facebook fan page.

Jekyll Island Authority gets extra help from volunteer event planning committees

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Beginning this year, the Jekyll Island Authority Event Marketing team is getting extra help via volunteer participation on event planning committees. The committee approach was initiated to encourage more community and inter-departmental involvement at all Jekyll Island events.”Our local business owners, managers, and residents are great resources for ideas and are eager to help,” said Jones Hooks, Executive Director of the Jekyll Island Authority. “By establishing these committees, we hope to bring those ideas together and open more lines of communication between the JIA and our community.”

The Event Planning Committees are divided into two categories. Event Support Committees help bolster all events via sponsorship sales, fund-raising, entertainment negotiations, financial management, volunteer recruitment, and environmental oversight. Event Committees work on issues directly related to their specific event. An Event Steering Committee, comprised of representatives from each of the other committees, oversees all events and makes decisions on any new event proposals.

“With more people involved we are able to gather ideas and find better solutions,” said Beth Burnsed, Event Marketing Coordinator for the Jekyll Island Authority. “We want our annual events to be more community-oriented rather than just promote tourism. So far the response has been extremely positive and we appreciate the input and support.”

Interested parties are still invited to participate on an Event Committee. To sign up contact Beth Burnsed, Event Marketing Coordinator for the Jekyll Island Authority at 912-635-4189. For more information on all Jekyll Island events, visit www.jekyllisland.com.

Shrimp & Grits – Somethin’ Big!

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

I hope all of you had a chance to enjoy Shrimp & Grits: The Wild Georgia Shrimp Festival this past weekend. If you did not, you missed out on some great food, great fun and, for me, a great team in action. I can’t say enough about our team, and about our event leader Beth Burnsed.

We also have a great partner is this event, the Georgia Shrimp Association. With GSA’s help, we were able to secure our celebrity chef Uncle Bubba. Bubba was a big hit, selling out autograph books in less that two hours.

And our other partners – Georgia Tourism, Coca-Cola, Michelob/Budweiser, Jim Dandy, Brunswick Toyota, AT&T, Golden Isles Nissan, Ameris Bank, Stratton Hall, Jekyll Island Club Hotel, Latitude 31/Rah Bar – made an event of this size possible.

We also appreciate the work of Monkey Love Media and GCI Group for getting the word out, we had some great event coverage.

Our visitation numbers put the crowd for the weekend event at 11,800. We’ll be getting a full report together soon – and begin work on next year’s festival!

Shrimp and Grits a Hit on Jekyll (from the Brunswick News)

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By KRISTA HARRIS
The Brunswick NewsWith quick hands, Joe Barnett shoveled out a mound of shrimp and grits to place in a dish.”This is going to be good,” he said with a broad smile and Southern accent.

His creation, “Well, Split My Grits,” was for the Second Annual Wild Georgia Shrimp Festival on Jekyll Island this weekend.

On Saturday, amateur cooks came out to try their luck at creating the most delicious shrimp and grits concoction.

Barnett, from Washington, Ga., was the winner of last year’s amateur competition. He got to cook his signature dish, General Oglethorpe’s Shrimp and Grits, on the Martha Stewart show earlier this year.

“I’m trying something totally different,” he said, taking a break from handing out the dish. “The recipe, Well, Split My Grits, got its name from the football-shaped space in the middle of the grits, which serves as reservoir for a special mixture of cheese and cream spinach.”

Barnett says he has several recipes and lets his family members decide which one to use in competition.
“This was my family’s favorite (this time),” he said, holding up a steaming plate of shrimp and grits covered in fettucine sauce, different seasonings and a secret ingredient.

It was his 15-month old grandniece’s, Cassidy Barnett, favorite and Barnett could not refuse her.

Barnett says this is a great festival for Jekyll Island, which he calls his second home.

“It’s a good thing,” Barnett said. “Give it a little time and it will be a big thing.”

Some people travel from out-of-town to taste the Southern dish.

“I’ve never heard of shrimp and grits,” said Cherrilyn Brooks.

Brooks, her husband Robert, and their two girls, Andrea, 12, and Victoria, 7, traveled from Jacksonville to get their first taste of shrimp and grits. It was also their first time on Jekyll Island.

“I’m excited,” Brooks said, looking around the historic millionaire’s village on Jekyll Island.

“It’s very beautiful.”

As they walked toward the variety of vendors and food booths, the McNeese family was taking a break from the sun underneath an ancient oak near Sans Souci by the Jekyll Island Club Hotel.

“We’ve eaten one of everything,” said Buddy McNeese. He and his wife, Mindy, enjoyed the shrimp and grits from Latitude 31, a local restaurant on the Jekyll Island marina, which had a booth set up.

Their 8-year-old son, Campbell, agreed, adding that it “was delicious.”

However, the food was not Campbell’s favorite part of the festival.

He enjoyed rock climbing but admits his younger sister went higher than he did.

“I did,” Hansley Cate, 6, said, grinning proudly.

Her friend, Olivia Ann Packard, 6, says she would rather climb the oak tree, or play with the bubbles from the Bubble Man, Robin Booth, of Stone Mountain.

Mandy McNeese says the family had a wonderful time but wishes the festival had more things for the children to do.

Music blared from the stage set up across from the club hotel. Booths filled with shrimp, grits, funnel cakes, corn dogs and every festival food imaginable lined the park.

On Sunday, the professional chefs set up shop to test their skills at cooking tasteful shrimp and grits dishes.

The whole weekend was filled with loads of Wild Georgia shrimp, grits, music, games and boat rides.
